Kennels

Our Kennels have been planned carefully to blend in with our environment, providing spacious, secure accomodation which is naturally sheltered.

The kennel buildings, set back in a rocky bank, stand on a concrete base and damp-proof membrane. They are purposefully built low in order to preserve the body heat of the dogs and also encorporate a wind break entrance. Thick glass blocks allow daylight to filter through, although the position of the kennels means that there is always shade and they are cool in Summer. On the doorsteps are "patios".

Inside, the dogs sleep on a raised wooden platform which can be easily removed for cleaning. The sloping roofs can be lifted to further assist in cleaning. In Winter we fill the kennels with an abundance of fresh straw. There is plenty of room for two dogs to share each kennel although we also have facilities for complete isolation.

The flooring for the runs consists of pea gravel over rough stone. After much research and experience we have found this to be a most hygenic solution. Faeces can be easily scooped up and urine drains through the gravel avoiding the dogs having to constantly tread in it. We frequently power hose rock salt through the gravel which is an excellent natural and effective disinfectant. The kennel being treated then stands empty for a few days to avoid the possibility of salt solution on the dog's pads.

Even with these facilities, BMK dogs spend more time out of their kennels than in them and they spend most of their time socialising together and with the family.
