Reasons behind this breeding This litter we have purposefully out crossed to an East German working line. While we are very happy with the conformation and temperament of the dogs we have produced to date using predominantly West German show / old herding lines, we are uncomfortable with how those working with these lines, both here and in Germany, are interpreting the breed standard. For some reason, judges are awarding honours to dogs with hinged or roached (hunched) backs. Dogs with backs like this have pelvises which are rotated beneath them and because of this appear deformed in the hind quarters. The original thinking behind the roached back was to gain more power transference from the hind quarters through the back into the shoulders and create an even more powerful dog in movement. Dogs constructed like this tend to bounce up and down when gaiting however, and have sadly lost the breathtaking, level (and efficient) gait of the original dog. We are also shocked to see more and more of these lines failing the courage test in the German Sieger show. This is what happens when temperament is put second to appearance in breeding. Concentrating so hard on choosing breeding stock to create a roached back has meant that the true working character has suffered because dogs possessing this have not been selected for breeding. A dog with no courage is a potential fear biter. It has been difficult to find stud dogs to meet our requirements and so we have out crossed to a notable East German working line. Dogs from this line were border patrol, tracking and police dogs and as such were strong in working character. These breeders concentrated on true temperament not on changing the appearance of the dog. The backs are straight and strong and the gait is level and fluid. We particularly wanted to bring in the bloodline of Sven vom Gräfental as he is well known for producing dogs of sound temperament that are also of good enough conformation to be awarded ‘V’ (Excellent) by a breed judge. His pedigree goes back though the famous working dog Bernd Lierberg via the great producer of working character, Alf vom Körnersee (PSH1). We were very happy to be able to use Quiyk vom Gräfental, in our opinion one of Sven's best sons, in this breeding. Our many thanks to Margaret Crispin (Tracelyn GSDs) . From this litter we are expecting medium to high drives and good intelligence with a high desire to please and learn. Nerves should be rock steady once mature. Conformation wise we are expecting nice dark pigmentation with dark masks, gently sloping level toplines and strong heads.
