BMK puppies are whelped in our conservatory which
has two, toughened glass doors opening onto our farmhouse kitchen.
Among the very first sounds and sights they experience are those
of a busy family household and the rest of the pack.
Our pups are handled daily by ourselves and the
children, imprinting human scent and voice, kindling the natural
desire for human companionship which develops into loyalty and
the desire to please and ultimately to work.
When the Dam is relaxed about the presence of the
rest of the pack (which is usually from 2 - 3 weeks) the pups
are gently introduced to our other dogs. This early experience
allows the pack to welcome the new members and know their scent.
Pups benefit hugely by this early education in canine communication,
good manners and appropriate behaviours.
At the age of 4-5 weeks, the puppies are ready to
meet visitors to the house including other children and babies.
Characters are forming and personalities emerging. It is endless
fun and fascination to watch them from now on.
When the puppies are 7 weeks old they are assessed
using the Vollhard Puppy Aptitude test. It has been proven that
this is the age to best obtain a glimpse of the mature dog. From
the tests we are able to confirm the characters and behaviours
we have been watching over the last few weeks. By the time the
puppies are ready to go to their new homes at 8 weeks old we have
a very good idea about levels of dominance, prey drive, persistance,
independance, confidence, courage etc. We find this invaluable
when helping people select a puppy to suit them.
